I wouldn’t consider a badge-engineered Durango trying

If you call that trying, I’d hate to see what giving up looks like.

They made a few of these as hybrids with the Hemi. So weird

The only real difference I see here is midsized entry-level car vs. “luxury” SUV. The family resemblence, i.e. styling, quality, and overall “effort” put into making the vehicles are certainly there.

Products like the Aspen, Crossfire, first LX 300, last Sebring, first Pacifica, and Town & Country kind of struck me as when a crappy restaurant sticks crisp tablecloths and a fake rose on all their tables, or like when your redneck cousin tries to dress up by pinning a clip on tie to a white golf shirt. You can definitely tell what Chrysler was trying to do, but they still werent pulling it off.

Do I blame Chrysler for those rims? If so, they deserve whatever they’ve gotten.

This. This is what giving up looks like. Not even fielding an offering in all but two segments.

I never said they succeeded...

Truth is, from the reviews I saw, it was a pretty good truck based SUV at the time. It got dinged on second row space, mileage (who cares in a truck that big though), and most importantly interior materials.

A true one-year unicorn. It’s like joining a game of Candyland when the other two players are three spots away from winning, then wondering what you did wrong as suddenly everyone just quits the game.

/chose candyland because it’s easy

//just like turning trucks into luxury SUVs

Oh, they were definitely trying. But, the interior materials were easily the biggest issue with everything Chrysler at the time. I still see Aspens on the road with some regularity, they were built locally, so I’d guess an unusual concentration got sold around here.

When the Aspen came out:

Now:

Kinja'd!!!

Trying is at least fielding something in the major segments. Now, they don’t even offer anything in most.

Sad thing is, the 300 and Pacifica are good cars, better than much of what Chrysler offered ten years ago compared to their competition. It’s just not enough.

Was it really trying? It was a sloppy Durango badge-slap. On par with the first gen Escalade in terms of try-ability.

I had a neighbor who kept his parked on the street. Not bad for a budget SLK. Like all things Chrysler at that time, where it fell down was the interior quality. I just saw a convertible one on the way to work today. I thought, “yeah, I’d still hit that.”

Sad thing is they are now to where the two cars they still sell are good cars with quality interiors to match. It’s just too late, as their FCA overlords don’t care. I really would love to see some American investor swoop in and rescue them and turn them into something to be proud of, but that’s a pipe dream.

You’re right. But at least they put something in the class, and it supposedly matched up okay with the Escalade et al. with pundits in its first year.

These days, they have nothing.

There’s an awful lot of badge engineering going on there, also the PT Cruiser

That thing was overly blingified.

The PT was at least novel when it came out. In particular, it seemed like a practical vehicle, designed for the minivan segment. I think experience has shown them to be rather ho-hum.

Someone in my town has an Aspen Hybrid. I’ve been trying to get a pic of it for a while. Ferrari F40 owners wish they had a car that exclusive. Between the Durango and Aspen hybrids less than 400 were produced.
